Choosing The Perfect Wedding Gift

Married couples. As well as requiring you to turn up wearing the perfect wedding guest outfit and for you to have boundless cash for the £5 a drink bar, the cheeky lovebirds also need a gift.

Some have gift lists (inevitably you are left with a single spatula or a £90 gift set of plates) and some ask for money. But what if you want to offer something special? To prevent Department Store Breakdown (DSB), morethanakeyword offers this handy guide to getting that perfect wedding gift.

Art work
Although it’s hard to choose, I think that getting a newly married couple a piece of well picked, thought through, unique bit of artwork can be such a wonderful gift. It’s great for a new home, and if like many couples in our generation they already live together, it stands as a nod to the old fashioned ‘married and move in’ ideals without having to try work out what gadget or utensil they might somehow need in their cohabited abode.
I love art.co.uk because they have a huge range of sizes and styles so it's great for each budget- as well as for city flats where they might prefer 3 small prints instead of one sprawling print. I know that London city scapes are cliché, but some of these have a really fresh look and are great if they live or moved away from the capital. (I myself have prints of Cambridge to keep me from being homesick!)

Searches for ‘love’ or ‘hearts’ brings up some beautiful prints of sand, portraits, modern and minimalist art that can be matched to any couple.
Alternatively check out Etsy, where you can get specific, personalized art for the happy pair.

A framed wedding day photo
A nice idea that my family gave me once by doing just this was taking a picture at the wedding in black and white, before nipping en route to the reception via Boots to print the image. Putting it in a classic frame, this can be presented to the couple as they eat to put on the table in front of them, and the delight of seeing themselves (married couples never get to see the pictures until days later or even after the honeymoon) will be well worth the rush of getting them printed out.

An Experience
They say in life, it’s the journey, not the destination. In any case a trip away zorbing, hiking, feeding penguins or at a theme park can make happy memories for the new couple.
I recommend taking a look at buyagift who are always very well priced and offer an easy to navigate website. I would also look at things like Go Ape for high rope fun, Alton Towers, Flamingo Land to feed penguins at, and lastminute if you can stretch to a gift day racing a supercar or similar.
I have in fact enjoyed a trip in an Ariel Atom and have fed penguins, hence my insistence for you to do the same!

A holiday cottage/Trip away

A break away can be a really nice gift – even if you club together to get one, or decide to put in what you can if you are a big earner!
Cottages 4 u have a really good search function, whilst welcomecottages
sell themselves on their pet friendly homes away from home. You’ll pay around £220 for a nice cottage for 3 nights, so this is a great gift shared.

Gadgets

Who doesn’t love a good gadget? As my boyfriend likes to note- the wedding is ‘for the girl’. The stag do, party and drinks are ‘for the boy’. However, a wedding gift is for them both so you need something that works in the kitchen or the living room, not just a hard drive or a nail dryer.
What about a really decent i-dock? Amazon have plenty that vary in price and functionality.
As well as this you could look to get the new couple:
  • A breadmaker
  • A coffee perculator
  • A modern alarm clock
  • A beautiful vintage telephone

Magazine subscriptions
She likes She and he likes Viz- so why not buy two? Usually around £15-£30 over a year, you can buy these for in toilet harmony. You could also get a years worth of newspapers if you live locally to the married couple and know about their penchant for tabloids or high brow news. You could also get a new magazine regarding food, like delicious or Good Food- a great way for them to hone in on those meals for two!

Cash

Cash is cold and hard, but usually, gratefully received.
Foreign currency is a great idea for the honeymoon, but cash for the new home they will share is also a great idea. I like the idea of popping cash in a champage bottle and wrapping it up. (Notes.) If this is from a group of you you can also add in funny notes, small sweets and other ideas relevant to you all.

A love hamper
A love nest hamper is a nice idea for newly married couples for those idyllic first days! This might not be a goof gift to get from a family member, but from a friends this is a nice 'nudge nudge wink wink' sort of gift! Get a big wicker hamper or nbasket and crisp cellophane to wrap it in.You could include:
-China cups and plates
-Marmalades and Jams and mini butters pilfered from a hotel
-Packaged Croissants with a good sell by date
-Quality coffee
-Strawberries
-A romantic book or two
-A funny DVD
-A romantic CD (Think Soul music!)
-A small bottle of bubbly/wine
-Candles (roman or tea lights)
-Bubble bath
-Matching printed ‘Mrs’ and ‘Mr’ t-shirts

Bed Linen
What’s nicer than light and breezy 100% cotton bed linen?
A crisp double or king set will always be well appreciated by any couple. Go for white with minimal detail to avoid clashing with anything else in their house.

So there you go, plenty of wedding gift ideas, and that’s before you even scan the wedding list!
